Mihai Popșoi previously called Blinken's visit a "strong signal of political and financial support" for the country.
"While some do everything to put us in difficulty, others come and help us and extend this friendly helping hand to overcome these difficulties that others create for us, for which we are extremely grateful," he said , probably alluding to Russia. Blinken last visited the Republic of Moldova a few weeks after Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
According to Jim O'Brien, the US assistant secretary of state for Europe, the main American diplomat, Antony Blinken, will announce in Chisinau, "a robust package of support" for our country. He said the aid would focus partly on energy. The Republic of Moldova used import almost all natural gas from Russia.
O'Brien said Blinken would also announce measures to boost democracy and combat disinformation ahead of elections later this year in which pro-European President Maia Sandu is seeking a new mandate, according to Euroaktiv. com.
Blinken's trip comes a week after the European Union signed a security and defense pact with the Republic of Moldova, which also aims to help the country defend itself against Russian threats, including in the field of cyber security. The Republic of Moldova is officially a candidate for EU accession.
Blinken will spend a day in our country at a time when Russia is recording a series of victories on the battlefield in Ukraine. The visit also coincides with a move by Georgia, another former Soviet republic, which on Tuesday passed a law against "foreign influence" seen as being inspired by the Kremlin.
