Washington would adopt sanctions against those who intend to compromise democracy in the Republic of Moldova. Maia Sandu: "Corruption knows no borders"
The United States of America could impose new sanctions against those who intend to undermine democracy in the Republic of Moldova. Washington will make this decision if it obtains evidence to that effect, said the US Secretary of State Antony Blinken in Chisinau. Also, the Moldovan authorities are collecting this information in order to transmit it to the United States, said President Maia Sandu. According to the Head of State, corruption knows no borders, and "solutions must be identified together".
"We have a new package of sanctions against those who try or seek to undermine democracy in the Republic of Moldova. As we obtain the necessary information to support these sanctions, we will continue to adopt them," said the top US diplomat. Cooperation between the Republic of Moldova and the partner country is essential, declared Maia Sandu, for her part. She emphasized that there are previous decisions that confirm the importance of this collaboration.
"The authorities in the Republic of Moldova collect this information and further transmit it to the authorities in Washington, and respectively, the decision comes from there, depending on how well documented the information is presented by our institutions. We have seen several decisions in the past and this element of cooperation is a very important one. Our fight against corruption, in particular, in the context where the Republic of Moldova is in full reform of the institutions that must fight corruption, of the institutions in the field of justice and, at this stage, our institutions are not fully effective, so that they can deal with these problems on their own".
We remind you that recently the American ambassador Kent D. Logsdon declared that the United States of America could impose new sanctions on the Moldovan oligarchs. The diplomat emphasized that the sanctions previously imposed on Moldovan oligarchs were effective, they also affected the reputation of those targeted.
We remind you that in October 2022 the US Treasury Department announced sanctions, based on the so-called Magnitsky Act, against two Moldovan oligarchs Vladimir Plahotniuc and Ilan Şor and several entities and individuals associated with them for actions related to systemic corruption and interference in elections in favor of the Russian Federation. Sanctioned persons are prohibited from entering the US territory and cannot make transactions on their own accounts, but also for the benefit of other citizens of the Republic of Moldova.
A year later, Washington announced new sanctions against MP Marina Tauber. The reason behind that decision was related to the undermining of the electoral processes in the Republic of Moldova in the interests of the Kremlin through illegal vote buying.
