Combatting Disinformation: EU Ambassador Urges Verification of Claims

The Ambassador of the European Union to Chișinău, Janis Mazeiks, has responded to a circulating online video alleging that the Ministry of Education and Research (MEC), with support from the EU, plans to establish a military-themed camp for children.

The video also suggests that as of June 1, numerous students will engage in military-related activities, including weapon training. Mazeiks emphasised that such disinformation campaigns underscore a significant issue.

"It is somewhat amusing to find my face featured in disinformation campaigns targeting young people; however, this underscores a serious problem," wrote the ambassador on his Facebook page. He noted that disinformation actors seek to lend credibility to the narratives they propagate by associating them with the EU, aiming to confuse and mislead the population of the Republic of Moldova and instil fear.

The ambassador cautioned Moldovans about the upcoming autumn elections, warning of increased attempts at deception by actors involved in disseminating disinformation.

"Do not let yourselves be deceived. Verify information from official sources," Mazeiks emphasised. "Remember, the EU remains a steadfast proponent of peace and prosperity."

The Ministry of Education and Research has refuted the claim regarding the establishment of a military-themed camp for children.
