Moldova Seeks EU Entry: Youth Rally in Chisinau
On Saturday, young people from various districts across Moldova carried drums and waved flags of the European Union as they marched through the capital city's centre in a rally for Moldova's accession to the European Union.
The march, titled "Youth March for a European Future," began at the intersection of Stefan cel Mare si Sfant Boulevard and Ismail Street.
Chanting slogans such as "Moldovans are Equal Europeans" and "We Want to Be Part of a United Europe," the protesters voiced their strong support for EU membership. Speeches were also delivered in front of the Moldovan Parliament in Chisinau.
Eugeniu Sinchevici, a Member of Parliament from the Party of Action and Solidarity (PAS), addressed the crowd, emphasising the shared goal of a prosperous and peaceful future within the European Union for Moldova's youth.
Romanian MEP Siegfried Mureșan also delivered a speech, congratulating the young people for their pro-European stance and commitment. He highlighted that their voices would be heard throughout the European Union and expressed his belief that Moldova's integration process had already begun.
Representatives from various youth organisations and associations also spoke at the event, sharing their desire for EU membership and outlining the potential benefits of European integration for Moldova. These included establishing European standards for education and healthcare throughout the country.
The march was organised by the Youth Organization of the Action and Solidarity Party.
It is important to note that Moldova and Ukraine are expected to officially commence negotiations for accession to the European Union at a planned intergovernmental conference in Brussels this June.
Moldova received candidate country status in June 2022, and EU leaders agreed to open accession negotiations in December 2023. A referendum on Moldova's EU membership will be held on October 20, coinciding with the presidential election.
