Tomac Proposes Romania as Security Shield for Moldova
By participating in the European Parliament elections, we send a political message that will carry significant weight in Brussels.
For us, those who unconditionally support the closeness of the Republic of Moldova to Romania and the European Union, this argument will be immensely helpful. It shows that Moldovan citizens do not hold Romanian passports merely for travel or benefits, but as engaged and responsible citizens of the European Union. This statement was made by MEP Eugen Tomac on the show IN CONTEXT. The MEP also specified that he will advocate in the European Parliament for Romania to be the security shield for our country.
"Everyone important in Brussels knows that half of the citizens of the Republic of Moldova are already citizens of the European Union. In this context, it is very important to send a political message that you are interested in the activities of the future European Parliament, where important decisions concerning the integration process of the Republic of Moldova will be debated and made. Matters concerning the security of the Republic of Moldova and, not least, the support needed by the business environment and the agricultural economy of the Republic of Moldova will be discussed there," said Eugen Tomac.
When asked if the security that the European Union can offer the Republic of Moldova is sufficient, the MEP responded that the EU is helping the Government of Chișinău to consolidate its security structures. However, the European Union does not have its own army; it only has instruments through which it can offer financial and logistic support. In his opinion, a solution would be a security shield offered by Romania.
"From my point of view, for a security umbrella, the citizens of the Republic of Moldova must know that they have an alternative. It is extremely bold and must be explained, supported, and widely debated to be understood by all. I advocate for it: the security shield that the Republic of Moldova can receive from Romania. But this is a distinct project, which we must obviously promote in the European Parliament with rational, pragmatic arguments, so that we can continue on this path that guarantees the security of the citizens of the Republic of Moldova."
