General Prosecutor Urges Swift Integrity Checks Amidst Reform Efforts
Nine prosecutors from the Anti-Corruption Prosecution (PA) have submitted resignation requests after being notified of the initiation of an external evaluation process.
The announcement was made by the General Prosecutor's Office on Thursday, marking the expiration of the 20-day notification period during which prosecutors were to decide whether to undergo evaluation or resign.
On the eve of these developments, General Prosecutor Ion Munteanu emphasised the urgency of swiftly verifying the ethical and financial integrity of prosecutors. This, he stressed, is crucial for consolidating teams, enhancing efficiency in case investigations, and removing toxic elements from the system.
It is important to clarify that the vetting process entails evaluating the ethical and financial integrity of over 200 prosecutors in key positions, as well as those aspiring to such roles. Those who fail to pass this evaluation will be dismissed and barred from holding the position of prosecutor or other public offices for 5-7 years.
Furthermore, it is noteworthy that the extraordinary evaluation of prosecutors and judges constitutes the most intricate aspect of the justice reform launched by the current government in Chișinău. It stands as a pivotal condition for commencing official negotiations for accession to the European Union.
