Expert: The neutrality status is not a guarantor of security. Investments are needed in the defence system

The neutrality status of the Republic of Moldova is not a guarantor of security, and our country has not taken enough measures to strengthen this sector. The opinion was expressed by the expert of the Association for Foreign Policy, Victoria Roșa, during the show "Paralela 47" of Radio Moldova. According to him, the country's defence system needs substantial investments, and its way of functioning must be reviewed.

"An example would be Finland, which is also a neutral state, which over the years has invested a lot in its military capabilities, acquiring equipment, state-of-the-art military technology and investing a lot in terms of military personnel. I think that the Republic of Moldova needs a big effort here. Of course, we have to invest a lot in the defence budget and understand that without financial resources it is impossible to modernise, professionalise and change the way the defence system in the Republic of Moldova is treated today", said Victoria Roșa.

Radio Moldova recalls that for the year 2023, the budget of the National Army of the Republic of Moldova was increased by 68% compared to last year and will constitute approximately one billion 700 million lei, which represents 0.55% of the country's Gross Domestic Product. Defense Minister Anatolie Nosatîi previously declared that this increase was insufficient. According to him, to ensure a change in the field of national defence, financial allocations equivalent to 2% of GDP are needed.
