Greece on High Alert: Wildfire Risk Shuts Parks
Greek Civil Protection declared a state of high alert in Athens today due to an extremely high risk of wildfires. As a result, authorities have ordered the closure of surrounding parks and forests.
This action comes in response to forecasts predicting a return of scorching temperatures, reaching 40 degrees Celsius once again, as reported by EFE. Additionally, Greek authorities have issued warnings of a very high risk of wildfires in seven other regions across the central and southern parts of the country, including the islands of Lesbos and Chios.
Effective immediately, Greek authorities have banned vehicle traffic and access for recreational users in national parks, forests, and other designated high-risk areas within these regions, according to Civil Protection.
The Hellenic Meteorological Service forecasts that the high temperatures will be accompanied by strong winds, further exacerbating the risk of active wildfires throughout the country.
