The Republic of Moldova must adjust its legislation to that of the EU, if it wants to be part of the EU, former minister Nicu Popescu
The Republic of Moldova must implement the entire European legislation, if it wants to be part of the European Union, declared the former Minister of Foreign Affairs, Nicu Popescu. According to him, the start of accession negotiations to the community space will bring the Republic of Moldova into the Schengen area and the euro zone.
"The most important thing is that the Republic of Moldova must implement the entire European legislation in absolutely all areas. There are 35 chapters. We have to bring our standards up to European standards. There will be more transition periods. It is not necessary to do everything by the time of joining. There are certain measures that can be implemented later too," declared former Foreign Minister Nicu Popescu during a special edition of the "In Context" program on Moldova 1 TV.
The former head of diplomacy from Chisinau claims that "there is a lot of work in absolutely every field", so that the Republic of Moldova implements the Community acquis.
"The negotiation process involves some discussions on the transition periods on the support that our partners can offer us in this process of adjusting our country to the European rigors", concluded Nicu Popescu.
The former Minister of Foreign Affairs Nicu Popescu said that the war in Ukraine is a tragic one, but the decision to offer the Republic of Moldova the status of a candidate state for the European Union took place in this geopolitical context.
We remind that the Republic of Moldova submitted an application for EU accession in March 2022 and was granted the status of a candidate country in June 2022. In December 2023, the leaders of the European Union decided to open accession negotiations. On June 25, in Luxembourg, the first intergovernmental conference was held, which officially launched the EU accession negotiations.
