Moldova Boosts Pay to Fight Doctor Shortage
In a bid to address staffing shortages within the healthcare system, the Moldovan Parliament has passed legislation granting increased allowances and compensations to young doctors and pharmacists.
These financial incentives are specifically aimed at attracting and retaining medical professionals, particularly in rural areas and small towns facing a critical lack of personnel.
The new measures extend the mandatory service period for medical professionals from three to five years after graduation. This policy aims to ensure a sustained presence of qualified doctors and staff in underserved regions.
According to official statistics, Moldova’s healthcare system currently employs approximately 12,600 doctors and 23,687 medical personnel with secondary schooling (as of 2022). However, a significant shortage of specialists persists in key areas, including family medicine, anaesthesia and intensive care, radiology and medical imaging, internal medicine, emergency medicine, cardiology, and paediatrics.
