A group of owners of cars with foreign license plates protested under the Telecentru bridge. The demands of the protesters

Protest in the capital. A group of car drivers gathered, today, under the bridge in the Telecentru district, to express their dissatisfaction with the new restrictions imposed by the authorities in the case of cars with foreign registration numbers. According to them, if until now a car with foreign licence plates could be on the territory of the Republic of Moldova for up to three years, from January 1 the rule changed, the term being less than six months. The protesters are calling for this law to be repealed or, at the very least, for more clarity to be made in the Regulation, which is applied by the Customs Service to these vehicles.

Petru Pădure owns a car, which he imported from Lithuania four years ago. The man says that the total value of the car is about four thousand euros, and to repair it he would have to pay four times more.

"*I want to ask who made the law, the average salary here in the country is eight thousand lei and to maintain my car, which is 2.7, at its age, is 17,000 euros. How many years do you have to work with a salary of 8-10 thousand lei to collect 17,000 euros? Why didn't they think of custom clearing at an affordable price?", asks the driver.

As a sign of protest, several drivers parked their cars under the bridge in the Telecentru district. Outraged drivers with foreign number plates say that unless the amendment is revised, they will be forced to break the law.

"I have been the owner of a car with foreign numbers for two years. I also have a European driver's licence. We would like it explained to us, why laws like these are imposed, as long as we pay the vignette?";

"They forced us to stay on the territory of the Republic of Moldova for 180 days, for what reasons? No explanation was given, the law was made and that was it. I pay 400 euros per year for the vignette.";

Called by the Moldova 1 reporter for a reaction, representatives of the Customs Service did not answer the phone. According to the decision, from January 1, 2023, resident and non-resident natural persons have the right to introduce means of transport on the territory of the Republic of Moldova, for a period of up to 180 days, during 12 consecutive months, without exceptions. More precisely, the car can be in the country for 6 months, and another six months - abroad.
