Double number of fires in Greece compared to June 2023

The wildfires that affected Greece this year are more than twice as many as last year, and so far, in June alone, they have burned almost 10 thousand hectares.

According to the government in Athens, this year in June there were almost 1,300 fires, compared to 533, recorded in the same period in 2023.

Experts of the National Observatory of Greece say that the areas burned this year are already 5 times higher than the average of the last 25 years. All because of the heat wave that hit Greece, like other countries, much earlier than in other years, with temperatures that locally reached 44 degrees Celsius.

The forecasts for this month are just as worrying, because temperatures over 40 degrees Celsius are expected in the next period as well.
