Oliver Varhelyi: The Republic of Moldova can achieve the goal of joining the EU by 2030 only if it fulfills all the conditions
At this stage, it is not possible to say how ready the Republic of Moldova is to join the European Union by 2030, but this goal can be achieved if it fulfills all the conditions by then, said the European Commissioner for Enlargement and Neighborhood, Oliver Varhelyi, in an interview for Ziarul de Gardà.
"Whether the European Union will be ready is another question, but if you ask me what is my personal opinion, then there are a number of political decisions that have been taken lately that point to that date. You have seen that leaders have discussed this issue at every meeting of the European Council for the last three years and it is clear that the European Union wants enlargement, it is also clear that the next institutional cycle will be marked by enlargement".
According to the European official, the EU bloc should be able to receive new members until the end of the current mandate of the European Commission in October 2029, according to the political agenda recently adopted by the European Council.
On July 10, Oliver Varhelyi paid a visit to Chisinau where he had meetings with the top officials and participated in the first session of the bilateral screening between the Republic of Moldova and the European Commission.
