Borrell: Next Peace Summit should include Russia, but not on Putin's terms
Ukraine will continue to look for ways to organize the next peace conference with the participation of Russia, said the High Representative of the European Union, Josep Borrell. He emphasized that the talks will not take place under the conditions imposed by the leader of the Kremlin, Vladimir Putin.
"I am sure that President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s will to continue advancing on peace talks and to have another conference with Russia’s attendance is real, certainly. I have already said what has been said - the next step requires the involvement of Russia. But have a look at what Putin said during the visit of (Hungarian) Prime Minister (Viktor) Orban to Moscow. Have a look. These are the preconditions of Putin," he added.
At the same time, the European official emphasized that the peace summit in Switzerland had a good result, but that it needs to be improved.
“Around 90 countries agreed to the final statement of this meeting, but we must go further to counter Russian propaganda, clarify and explain to anyone and everyone in the world exactly what is happening. That it is Russia that is carrying out an attack against Ukraine. To remember that there is an aggressor and there is a party that is subjected to aggression. That Ukraine defends itself, and we help Ukraine in self-defense".
The European Union supports President Zelenski's peace formula, Borell said.
"We support President Zelensky's Peace Formula, which is the only peace plan in this city, in Brussels. The only peace plan supported by the European Union".
Previously, the Russian Foreign Minister, Sergei Lavrov, stated that the discussion on the organization of the second Peace Summit regarding Ukraine contains unacceptable approaches for Russia and "many other" states. And, the authorities in Kiev said that Ukraine intends to organize the second Summit for Peace by the end of this year, involving Russia.
