Hungary issues an ultimatum to Ukraine for the unblocking of EU funds intended for armaments

Hungary will continue to block the 6.5 billion euro funding program for military aid to Ukraine from the European Peace Fund until Kiev resumes supplies of Russian oil. A statement to this effect was made by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Hungary, Peter Szijjártó, in an interview for ATV Hirado. He pointed out that Hungary and Slovakia's energy supply is under threat because 33% and 40-45% of their crude oil imports come from a Russian company and the oil transits through Ukraine.

Szijjártó added that the association agreement between the European Union and Ukraine clearly stipulates that it cannot completely or partially interrupt the transit of energy carriers through its territory to EU member states.

The minister claims that it will be difficult for the European Commission to support Ukraine in this situation, but he emphasized that Hungary will not limit itself to just making a complaint at the level of the Union.

"Siyarto said that until Ukraine solves the current problem, everyone should abandon the idea of 6.5 billion euros, money given for the supply of weapons from the European Peacekeeping Program. The European Commission should put pressure on Ukraine to allow the supply of oil through Ukraine," said Peter Szijjártó.

We remind you that Ukraine recently stopped the transit of Russian oil to Hungary and Slovakia by a Russian company. Ukrainian sanctions against this company have been imposed since 2018, but this year Kiev decided to strengthen them, banning oil transit. Hungary considers this decision of Ukraine unacceptable and unjustified. In addition, Hungary could sue, citing the threat to the country's energy security.

Budapest has previously blocked EU decisions on military aid to Ukraine.
