Russia's Drones Strike Ukraine, Hit Romania Too

Debris from Russian-made Shahed-136 drones, also known as Geran drones, was found near the town of Plauru in Tulcea County, Romania.

This area borders the Ukrainian bank of the Danube River, where Russia launched attacks targeting critical infrastructure. The discovery prompted Romanian authorities to issue Ro-Alert warnings to the public.

Foreign Minister Luminița Odobescu strongly condemned Russia's repeated attacks on Ukrainian civilian infrastructure in a statement released by the Romanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The statement confirmed that debris from these attacks was found within Romanian territory. Romanian officials have informed their allies and are coordinating a joint response. The Ministry expressed strong condemnation for these irresponsible actions.

In response to a second consecutive night of drone attacks near the Romanian border, Romanian fighter jets were scrambled on Wednesday night to monitor airspace. This follows a similar incident on the previous night.

The Romanian Air Force has intensified airspace monitoring activities using all available resources in the wake of these drone attacks.

Defense Staff Chief General Gheorghiță Vlad announced that the recovered fragments will undergo chemical analysis to ensure they do not pose a threat.

According to a report by Hotnews, this is not the first instance of drone debris being found in Romania. In September 2023, fragments of a Russian drone were discovered near Plauru in Tulcea County, following another Russian attack. Romanian authorities initially delayed confirming the incident due to conflicting reports about unmanned aerial vehicles entering Romanian airspace.

The Ukrainian Danube port of Izmail, located in the Odessa region, is just a few hundred metres from the Romanian border. The port was targeted by drones for the second consecutive night.
