Ursula von der Leyen Sets Deadline for European Commissioner Nominations

Until August 30, EU member states must each propose two candidates—one man and one woman—for the position of European Commissioner in the next European Commission.

Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, has sent a letter to the leaders of the member states requesting this, according to France Presse.

Each EU member state is represented by one member in the College of European Commissioners, which constitutes the political leadership of the European Commission for its five-year term.

Ursula von der Leyen intends to begin interviewing the candidates in mid-August. Each of the selected candidates will need to appear before the specialised committees of the European Parliament, after which the Parliament must secure the approval of the MEPs.

Several European Commissioners may remain in the next Commission, including Margaritis Schinas from Greece, Didier Reynders from Belgium, and Wopke Hoekstra from the Netherlands.

In some countries, such as Belgium and France, the situation is complicated by the lack of a fully functioning government.
