Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh was killed in an Israeli strike in Iran

The political leader of Hamas, Ismail Haniyeh, was killed in an Israeli strike on his residence in Tehran, the Palestinian group and the Revolutionary Guards in Iran announced on Wednesday, writes the BBC.

"Brother, leader, Mujahideen Ismail Haniyeh, the leader of the movement, was killed in a Zionist attack on his headquarters in Tehran after he attended the inauguration of the new president of Iran," Hamas said in a statement.

The Hamas group has not yet explained how exactly the attack that killed the Hamas leader was carried out.

The Israeli government and military have not yet made any statements about Haniyeh's death. IDF spokesman Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari only wrote on the social network X that the IDF is "assessing the situation."

Some Arab media outlets reported that Haniyeh was killed by a direct missile hit, but this information needs confirmation.

Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas strongly condemned the killing of Haniyeh, the Palestinian news agency WAFA reported.

Various Palestinian organizations have called on their supporters to demonstrate in protest against the assassination of the Hamas political leader.

As the BBC's Middle East correspondent Yolanda Knell notes, Hamas representatives have already said that the strike on Haniyeh marks a serious escalation of the conflict in the region and "will not go unpunished".

We remind you that ten members of the family of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh were killed, on June 25, in an Israeli attack in the Al-Shati Refugee Camp in Gaza City.

Haniyeh, 62, was born in a refugee camp near Gaza City and joined Hamas in the late 1980s. He has long been the militant group's political leader, according to CNN. Over the years, he has participated in peace talks with former US President Jimmy Carter and met with other world leaders, including Qatar's Emir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani and Chinese diplomat Wang Kejian earlier this year.
