Landslides in India: At least 156 people died

Landslides in the southern Indian state of Kerala have killed at least 156 people, government officials said today, as rescue teams resumed searching for people missing after mud and debris flows. Landslides in the Wayanad region trapped many people in their homes while they were sleeping, reports DPA.

District authorities are currently gathering data to determine the exact number of missing persons. Rescue teams, including the army and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), resumed their efforts early in the morning.

Helicopters are being deployed to airlift injured individuals from the affected areas. The tragedy has left 197 people injured and has led to the establishment of 45 relief camps, providing shelter to over 3,000 displaced residents.

The Kerala government declared a state of mourning on July 30 and 31.

These landslides are the worst natural disaster to hit Kerala since the devastating floods that hit the Indian state in 2018.
