The European Union will continue to support Ukraine in the fight against Russia as long as it is necessary, the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, mentioned in her speech.

She also stated that the transfer to Ukraine of the first 3 billion euro tranche of the 18 billion euro European support package for Kyiv is a "strong message" of support for Ukraine's financial stability.

European allies must supply Kiev with weapons as quickly as possible, including tanks, Polish President Andrzej Duda said. The Warsaw-based leader reiterated Poland's recent promise to send "about 14" German-made Leopard tanks to the Ukrainians.

The World Economic Forum in Davos will be held until January 20.
