Romania and Bulgaria’s accession to Schengen could be included on the agenda of the EU Council

Sweden wants to include the subject of Schengen Area expansion on the agenda of the Council of the European Union. The statement was made on Tuesday, in the plenary of the European Parliament, by the Swedish Prime Minister, Ulf Kristtersson, whose country holds the rotating presidency of the European Union.

"I appreciate your high expectations and understand the disappointment of some when it comes to joining the Schengen Area. Sweden understands that Bulgaria and Romania want to enter Schengen and we want to put this topic on the agenda in the Council", said Ulf Kristensson.

We remind you that last December, Austria and the Netherlands blocked the admission of Bulgaria and Romania to Schengen. Both countries oppose Bulgaria's accession, and for Romania only Austria is against it. In order to reach an agreement in this regard, unanimity on the part of the member countries is necessary.

According to the Bulgarian President Rumen Radev, this year they expect a solution to this problem by October at the latest.

Also in December, President Klaus Iohannis declared that he is 100% confident that Romania will become part of the Schengen area, specifying that the stake is not a certain date when this accession is discussed, but the entry into Schengen, and his hope is that this will happen this year.
