Child drowns in Prut River: Tragedy strikes Cahul

A 12-year-old child drowned in the Prut River near Vadul lui Isac, Cahul district. According to the Moldovan General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations (IGSU), the tragedy occurred on the afternoon of August 13 when two minors went swimming unsupervised.

The victim, a 12-year-old boy, submerged and did not resurface. His companion fled the scene. Border police discovered the child's clothing and bicycle and immediately alerted emergency services. IGSU divers from Cahul were dispatched to the site to conduct underwater search operations.

Search efforts continued throughout August 14 but were unsuccessful. On the morning of August 15, the child's body was recovered from the water near Colibaş village.

Law enforcement is investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.

IGSU data indicates that 56 adults and 10 minors have lost their lives in water-related accidents due to safety negligence since the beginning of the year.
