Ukraine repels drone attacks, advances in Russia
Ukrainian air defences successfully intercepted and destroyed all eleven Shahed-type attack drones launched by Russia during the night of August 19, according to the Ukrainian Air Force, as reported by The Kyiv Independent.
Russian forces allegedly deployed the drones from the Kursk region as well as Primorsko-Akhtarsk in Krasnodar Krai.
Ukrainian Air Force mobile fire units were instrumental in repelling the aerial assault. The drones were eliminated over the regions of Mykolaiv, Cherkasy, Vinnytsia, Kyiv, Dnipropetrovsk, Kharkiv, Sumy, and Donetsk, as reported by the air force.
Throughout the night, the air force issued warnings of impending drone attacks across multiple regions of the country. Fortunately, no casualties or infrastructure damage were reported as a result of the intercepted drones.
Since the beginning of 2024, Russian forces have intensified their attacks on Ukraine's critical infrastructure, targeting energy facilities in particular. In response, Ukraine implemented rolling power outages on May 15.
Concurrently, Ukraine has continued its offensive operations into Russia's Kursk region, destroying a second strategic bridge on the previous day. This incursion has now entered its fourteenth day, yet Russia has shown no indication of launching a large-scale counteroffensive to protect its territory, according to RADOR. To bolster their defensive capabilities, Russia has thus far redeployed only 5,000 troops from the Ukrainian front to the Kursk region, as reported by the Wall Street Journal.
Ukrainian authorities claim to have occupied approximately 1,150 square kilometres of territory and over 80 settlements. President Volodymyr Zelensky reiterated last night the government's objective of establishing a buffer zone to shield border regions from Russian bombardment.
In a separate address, President Zelensky acknowledged the advance of Russian forces near Toretsk and Pokrovsk but emphasised the Ukrainian army's unwavering commitment to holding its positions.
President Zelensky also urged Ukraine's allies to expedite the delivery of military aid. "Wartime does not tolerate delays," he stated. "We require immediate solutions and swift logistics for the promised packages."
In light of recent developments, Belarus has announced the deployment of one-third of its military forces to the Ukrainian border, citing a perceived buildup of Ukrainian troops.
