Bookfest Chișinău: A literary feast in Moldova
The International Book Fair "Bookfest Chișinău 2024" is set to showcase the latest literary releases, host author meet-and-greets, autograph sessions, and engaging literary discussions.
This celebration of Romanian literature will take place from August 28th to September 1st at the Mediacor Center within the Moldova State University.
Bookfest Chișinău will feature over 40 publishing houses from both sides of the Prut River, presenting more than 30,000 titles and a diverse array of book launches, debates, and autograph signings.
Sergiu Prodan, the Minister of Culture, emphasised the significance of Bookfest, noting that it not only serves the Republic of Moldova but also showcased the country's literary achievements at the recent Bucharest edition. He encouraged readers to visit Mediacor during the event to experience an exceptional concentration of books.
Elena Pintilei, the director of the National Library, highlighted the library's involvement in the catalogue development and the acquisition of books for the fair. She emphasised the library's commitment to distributing these books to public libraries throughout the country.
This year's Bookfest is distinguished by its impressive lineup of events and the participation of prominent Romanian literary figures. From the president of the Romanian Academy to leading authors like Ioana Pârvulescu, Radu Paraschivescu, Radu Aldulescu, and Mihaela Noroc, these individuals have garnered widespread recognition both domestically and internationally.
Sergiu Harea, the president of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of the Republic of Moldova, announced the Chamber's support for the fair's organisation, including the provision of 280 square metres of exhibition space. He emphasised the Chamber's dedication to promoting Romanian literature.
Beyond its cultural significance, Bookfest also holds economic importance. It serves as a platform for publishers, readers, and authors to connect, fostering a thriving literary ecosystem. Iurie Bârsa, a publishing director, highlighted the commercial aspect of publishing and expressed his desire for a prosperous and profitable industry for all Romanian-language publishers.
This year's Bookfest offers visitors discounts of up to 50% on all books on display. The Minister of Culture emphasised the event's unique value, stating that investing in books and culture ultimately enriches society.
The event is supported by the Ministry of Culture, the Department for Relations with the Republic of Moldova within the Romanian Government, and other institutions on both sides of the Prut River dedicated to promoting literature and reading.
