African renters denied apartments in Chișinău due to bias
Renting an apartment in Chișinău is becoming increasingly challenging for individuals from Africa who come temporarily to the Republic of Moldova, particularly to continue their studies.
These individuals often face discrimination based on their ethnicity, race, colour, or nationality.
Myriame, originally from Cameroon, contacted a real estate agency; however, the owner categorically refused to rent her the apartment upon discovering her African origin.
Divane, who had arranged a viewing of an apartment, was promptly denied by the owner upon his arrival.
Émeric attempted to rent through several agents, but discussions ended abruptly once his nationality became known.
Our colleague Willi reached out to several individuals who had posted ads for apartment rentals. Many refused to rent to him upon learning that he is from Africa.
Ian Feldman, President of the Council for Equality, emphasised that refusing to rent a home based on colour or ethnicity constitutes discrimination. He stated that the rights of these individuals are protected by Law 121, which pertains to ensuring equality.
Feldman urged those facing such situations to file complaints with the Council for Equality, which can review the cases and, in some instances, impose fines for discrimination.
