They participated in a lecture given by Laura Codruța Kovesi, the head of the European Public Prosecutor's Office, who is currently visiting the Republic of Moldova. She spoke to the students about the benefits of European integration and the fight against fraud and other crimes within the European bloc.

The meeting with Laura Codruța Kovesi prompted the law students who attended to seriously consider their future careers. They expressed that Kovesi’s example inspires them.

“She set a high standard for us with a powerful lesson on the very first day, motivating us to have a productive year of study. We should fully dedicate ourselves, set aside other concerns, and commit entirely to Moldova's development within the European Union. As students, we also play an important role because the future is ours.”

“We need to work, and generally, everyone must contribute; each person should fulfil their role. If it concerns prosecutors, since the question of the accession process was raised, you mentioned that Moldova should join the European Union sooner. It is important for everyone to contribute.”

The academic year began with a special lecture for law students. They learned about the role of prosecutors and the advantages of an EU state for investigating fraud, said Oleg Pantea, Vice Dean of the Faculty of Law at Moldova State University.

“The invitation was extended by the Ministry of Justice. As she is in the Republic of Moldova for a few days, it was decided to convey, through the university, a message to students and professors about the importance of Moldova’s integration into the European Union, including the benefits in the justice sector, and the fight against corruption. She also presented Romania’s model and discussed the role and independence of the prosecutor as a fundamental principle in the prosecutor's office,” clarified Oleg Pantea.

Laura Codruța Kovesi shared her experience with the European Public Prosecutor's Office and urged future lawyers to remain consistent in fighting corruption, which, she noted, exists everywhere.

“My message is that with accession to the European Union, they will have opportunities; the rest depends on them. They must work and be consistent. We discussed fighting corruption, and I emphasised that no country is free of corruption, so we should not concern ourselves with whether some countries are more or less corrupt. Corruption exists everywhere. I aimed to encourage them; while my advice to work and study may not have been popular, they will receive support, guidance, and access to better resources, and ultimately, their success depends on their efforts,” said Laura Codruța Kovesi.

Notably, today Laura Codruța Kovesi will also meet with President Maia Sandu and Prime Minister Dorin Recean. The head of the European Public Prosecutor's Office will also meet with Justice Minister Veronica Mihailov-Moraru and participate in a session of the Anti-Corruption Platform.

Laura Codruța Kovesi’s last visit to the Republic of Moldova was in July 2022, when a Cooperation Agreement was signed between the Prosecutor's Office of Moldova and the European Public Prosecutor's Office.
