Moldova votes on EU accession: Referendum insights for October
The Republican Constitutional Referendum, scheduled for October 20, 2024, offers all citizens of the Republic of Moldova a unique opportunity to participate directly in the amendment of a law.
This statement was made by Pavel Postica, Vice President of the Central Electoral Commission (CEC), during the Good Morning program on Moldova 1.
“At the republican constitutional referendum, each citizen of the Republic of Moldova has the opportunity to raise their hand, legislate, and decide whether we are heading in one direction or another,” declared Pavel Postica.
We note that the referendum will be deemed valid if one-third of eligible citizens of the Republic of Moldova, registered on the electoral rolls, participate. According to the CEC Vice President, citizens’ non-attendance at the polls will be considered a negative response. “Their absence, or their refusal to participate in this process, essentially counts as a negative vote, as it affects the electoral threshold. According to the Central Electoral Commission’s regulations, a boycott is equivalent to voting ‘no.’”
The official also noted that nearly 30% more polling stations will be opened this year for diaspora voters.
It should be remembered that the republican constitutional referendum on joining the European Union will take place on October 20, on the same day as the presidential elections. At the autumn plebiscite, citizens will be asked to answer the question: “Do you support amending the Constitution to enable the Republic of Moldova’s accession to the European Union?”
The proposed constitutional amendment includes the addition of two new paragraphs to the Supreme Law, which would reaffirm the European identity of the people of the Republic of Moldova and the irreversibility of the country’s European trajectory.
