Romania, Bulgaria and Latvia, among the EU countries that are rapidly losing their workforce
According to a 2023 European Commission report on the impact of demographic change, the EU has lost five million people from its working-age population in ten years, especially in Latvia, Bulgaria and Romania. This was largely due to the low birth rate and emigration.
The Commission data show that 82 regions in the European Union are already suffering from a decrease in the working population. At the same time, the share of people over 65 increased to approximately 21 percent in 2021. At the same time, the share of young people aged 15-29 is decreasing.
The commission estimates that the working population will shrink by 35 million by 2050 due to the continent's ageing trend.
Thus, the Commission will launch a pilot project to support EU regions and an initiative against youth emigration. At the same time, it will facilitate collaboration between countries and provide member states with a support tool to initiate national and regional reforms.
