Moldova's mixed progress on gender equality

The Republic of Moldova ranks 53rd out of 177 countries in the global ranking regarding gender equality, according to the latest report from the Georgetown Institute for Women, Peace and Security (GIWPS).

The 2023 report highlights progress in women's inclusion, education, and political representation, but draws attention to challenges such as maternal mortality and domestic violence.

Moldova has made significant strides in women's access to education and financial services. The proportion of women utilising financial services has increased from 19% in 2017 to 62.9% in 2023, indicating a substantial improvement in women's economic inclusion. Furthermore, the average number of years of schooling for women is 11.9, nearing European levels. Women are also better represented in Parliament, holding 38.6% of the seats.

However, the report notes that Moldova continues to grapple with high rates of domestic violence and maternal mortality. While the country has made progress in reducing legal discrimination, women's access to the legal system remains limited, GIWPS further observes.
