Tofilat: CFM needs 1,000 new wagons to be able to transport grain
The Moldovan Railways (CFM) needs 1,000 new grain wagons to be able to continue transporting goods, the director of the company, Oleg Tofilat, said in a press conference. According to him, approximately 84% more goods were transported in 2022 than in 2021.
The Moldovan Railway initiated the project regarding the purchase of 1,000 grain wagons to be delivered by 2025. The new wagons will be financed by an assistance loan from the Government of Poland in the amount of 65 million euros, noted the enterprise director, Oleg Tofilat. According to him, approximately 700 grain wagons will expire in 2024.
"Today, we have about 780 wagons, all of which will be out of service in 2025, but about 700 will expire in 2024. If we do not take measures, we may not have anything to export grain production, which poses a risk to the entire national economy. We need up to 1,000 grain wagons. We proposed that the credit given, offered by the Government of Poland for Moldova, an older credit from around 2015, to access funds from 40 million and above to procure wagons that will be produced in Poland and operated in Moldova", said the head of the CFM.
Oleg Tofilat added that in 2022 the total volume of transported goods was over 1,200 million tons per kilometre, approximately 84% more than in 2021. And the total turnover is close to 1.3 billion lei, double compared to 2021.
