New outbreaks of bird flu in the Republic of Moldova: Domestic birds fell ill due to contact with wild birds

Seven new outbreaks of bird flu were registered between September 25-27 in non-professional households in Nisporeni and Edineț districts, after domestic birds came into contact with wild birds, informs the National Food Safety Agency (ANSA). According to the deputy general director of the institution, Alexandr Manciu, about 850 animals are to be killed.

The outbreaks were confirmed in the localities of Marinici (2 outbreaks), Heleșteni (2 outbreaks) and Călimănești (1 outbreak) in Nisporeni district, as well as in Goleni village in Edineț district (2 outbreaks).

The Deputy General Director of ANSA, said that the birds cohabited or haad access to the same water spots. According to the plan of measures established by the Commission for Exceptional Situations, all the infected birds are to be eliminated in the respective households, and some of them have already been killed, and the areas subjected to rigorous disinfection.

"In total, we are talking about about 850 birds that are to be eliminated, and the damage assessment commissions are to prepare the necessary documents to later offer compensation to the owners," added the ANSA representative.

Authorities urge all bird keepers to take preventive measures to limit the spread of the disease, such as avoiding contact with other birds and restricting access to water sources or pastures, to prevent the spread of the bird flu virus.

"During this period of wild bird migration, it is essential that domestic birds are kept safely in households and do not come into contact with wild birds," Manciu pointed out.

ANSA warns that the outbreaks in Edineț are not connected to those in Nisporeni, but they were all caused by the contact of domestic birds with migrating wild birds.
