Russia asks the Republic of Moldova to stop blocking Russian-language web pages

Russia asked the Republic of Moldova on Friday to stop blocking Russian-language web pages, a practice it described as an attack on media freedom and the rights of the Russian-speaking population, reports Agerpres.

"We urge Chisinau to refrain from taking steps that have nothing in common with true freedom and democracy and to lift discriminatory bans on the broadcasting of Russian and Russian-language media," said the spokeswoman of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MAE) , Maria Zakharova. The Intelligence and Security Service of the Republic of Moldova ordered the blocking of two Russian news websites, Eadayli.com and Bloknot.ru, on Thursday. This decision is a new step towards the "expulsion of content and mass media in Russian from the information space" of the Republic of Moldova, noted Maria Zaharova. "All this is done against the background of an openly anti-Russian activity in the country (n.r. in the Republic of Moldova) by the Ukrainian and Western media", said the spokeswoman of the Russian MFA. According to Moscow, the measures against the Russian media are a violation of the rights of national minorities in the Republic of Moldova, a country which imposed a state of emergency after the outbreak of the war in Ukraine.
