The Republic of Moldova exports 85% of its wine: Almost half of the domestic wines sold on the EU market
The Republic of Moldova is the only wine-growing country that exports 85% of the wine it produces, and almost half of our wines are on the EU market, said the director of the National Vine and Wine Office, Ștefan Iamandi, in an interview for Moldova 1 TV. Although this year's grape harvest was down 30% due to drought, it was a good year for exports, surpassing pre-pandemic numbers.
"Our winemakers make an enormous effort to resist these obstacles, challenges. But our task, of the National Vine and Wine Office, is to promote quality wine. We organize many communication campaigns, promotion of the country brand, events abroad.
We export 85% of our wine. Practically all the wine is exported and it is the only example in the world as a wine country. We see clear results from the joint effort. For the first time, the USA became the number one market for the import of bottled wine in the Republic of Moldova. This is due to the effort of some wineries, who managed to obtain excellent contracts on the US market", said Ștefan Iamandi.
On the wine market, the Republic of Moldova has become quite competitive compared to other countries. Its advantage lies in the local varieties, which conquer consumers from all over the world, added Ștefan Iamandi.
"Our advantage is our domestic varieties, because everyone already knows about international varieties, such as Cabernet, Merlot, Chardonnay, but what we present are primarily our traditional domestic varieties such as Feteasca, Feteasca Albă Regală, Rara Neagră and varieties of new selection. We amaze the consumer with these wines that represent our terroir. It is not just an industry somewhere out there, in addition to hundreds of other industries as it is in other countries. In our case, it is a strategic industry for the Republic of Moldova", says the director of the National Vine and Wine Office.
According to the data of the National Bureau of Statistics, last year, the export of grape wines amounted to about 10.4 million decaliters. The main destination countries of Moldovan wine last year were Belarus, Georgia, Romania, the Czech Republic and Poland. Also, the Republic of Moldova delivered almost 300 thousand decaliters of sparkling wine. The largest quantities arrived in Romania, the United States of America, Germany, Turkey, Belarus.
