Another arrest in Moldova's electoral corruption investigation

Another individual implicated in an illegal scheme to finance political parties and electoral corruption will be placed under house arrest, following a journalistic investigation conducted by “Ziarul de Gardă,” as reported by the General Inspectorate of Police.

This recent detention occurs within the context that, on October 18, two other individuals were already placed under preventive arrest for 20 days, suspected of involvement in an electoral corruption scheme uncovered by the published investigation.

The third individual targeted in the investigation was located and detained on October 22, and today, October 24, the Chișinău Court, Ciocana branch, approved the prosecutors' request for house arrest for a duration of 30 days. According to zgd.md, this concerns Raisa Surdu – “Aunt Raia,” the president of the Dobrogea primary organisation within the “Victory” bloc.

Authorities continue to investigate the case to determine all circumstances and implications. It should be noted that after the elections on October 20, the authorities in the Republic of Moldova announced their focus on combating electoral corruption and preventing such offences in future elections. The Minister of Justice, Veronica Mihailov-Moraru, called on law enforcement agencies – the police, prosecutor's office, and courts – to better coordinate their actions to ensure transparency and fairness in the electoral process.
