Moldova’s police intensify crackdown on voter bribery cases
Law enforcement officials have announced that they have issued 295 reports related to cases of voter bribery, with 163 of these forwarded to the National Anti-Corruption Center (CNA) for review and legal action according to jurisdiction.
The General Inspectorate of Police reminds the public that individuals who cooperate with the investigation and provide relevant information will be exempt from fines under the law.
"The police are continuing to document individuals who accepted money in exchange for votes, as well as those who influenced others to engage in voter bribery. We encourage citizens to remain vigilant and report any attempt at electoral corruption. Only with everyone’s active involvement can we ensure a fair and transparent election process, free of illegal influences," the Inspectorate of Police stated.
Recently, the head of the General Inspectorate of Police, Viorel Cernăuțeanu, stated in an interview with Moldova 1 that the group led by fugitive Ilan Șor, convicted in the "Bank Fraud" case, orchestrated a large-scale voter bribery scheme in the Republic of Moldova using funds originating from the Russian Federation. He warned that the risks of such activities remain present for the second round of elections, urging citizens to cooperate with authorities to protect the integrity of the democratic process.
To date, the CNA has announced that it has already issued fines totaling approximately 1 million lei for electoral bribery. Individuals found guilty face fines ranging from 25,000 lei to 37,500 lei.
