Ion Chicu demands annulment of presidential election results
Former Prime Minister Ion Chicu, who ran in the presidential elections representing the Party of Development and Consolidation of Moldova (PDCM), denounced the fraud in the October 20 elections and requested the annulment of the results.
During a briefing on October 25, Chicu announced that he had submitted a request to the Chișinău Court of Appeal regarding this matter. The leader of the PDCM accused the Central Electoral Commission (CEC) of failing to ensure a free and democratic electoral process, asserting that the result is "fraudulent and distorted."
Chicu stated that his rights as a candidate, along with those of his supporters and other candidates, had been violated by the CEC and other electoral institutions. Accordingly, the PDCM requested that the Chișinău Court of Appeal annul the CEC's decision of October 23, 2024, concerning the centralization of voting results and the organization of the second round of voting.
"I believe that these elections were fraudulent; they were neither free nor democratic," Chicu stated. "Consequently, my right as a candidate, presented by the PDCM, was violated by the CEC, and I hold these nine members of the Commission accountable for the established violations.
Therefore, we will act in accordance with the law to ensure that citizens' rights are protected. We await a legal decision from the Court of Appeal, not one dictated by politics."
When contacted for a comment, the vice-president of the CEC, Pavel Postica, did not respond to our calls.
On October 20, the Republic of Moldova held presidential elections with 11 candidates, including former Prime Minister Ion Chicu. Following the first round, no candidate received the necessary majority to win the elections outright. Consequently, on October 23, the Central Electoral Commission (CEC) announced that the second round would take place on November 3.
The competition will be between President Maia Sandu, who is running for a new mandate on behalf of the Party of Action and Solidarity (PAS), and former Prosecutor General Alexandr Stoianoglo, supported by the Socialist Party.
