More and more people from Transnistria are applying for citizenship of the Republic of Moldova after the war in Ukraine deepened, claims the former Deputy Prime Minister for Reintegration, Gheorghe Bălan. According to him, Russian citizens need a visa to enter Ukrainian territory, and for this reason, many residents of the Transnistrian region need a legal passport that is recognized at the international level. "Indeed, in recent years, certain trends of increasing the number of applicants have been observed, in particular, after the conflict in Eastern Ukraine, Donetsk region, Lugansk and the ban on Russian citizens to transit the territory of Ukraine. There was a certain increase in the number of requests for confirmation of citizenship from residents of the Transnistrian region. At the moment, indeed, with the outbreak of hostilities, the full-scale war between Russia and Ukraine, this number has increased, as the world tries to secure a recognized citizenship, to be able to defend its basic human rights, the possibility to circulate, to exist, to learn", says Gheorghe Bălan.
Radio Moldova reminds its audience that last year about 10,800 people applied for citizenship of the Republic of Moldova, of which 6,600 are from the Transnistrian Region.
