Austria remains opposed to the Schengen extension. Statement by Chancellor Karl Nehammer
Vienna is still against Schengen expansion, and the high number of migrants detained in Austria shows "that the Schengen system is dysfunctional," Chancellor Karl Nehammer said.
The Head of Government in Vienna asked for "full support for Bulgaria and Romania and concrete measures from the European Commission to strengthen the protection of the external border" of the European Union.
So far, the European Commission has refused to provide funds for walls, fences and barbed wire, wanting only to support border infrastructure. In December, the Commission said it was up to Bulgaria to decide what means to use to protect its borders.
Radio Moldova reminds its audience that in December of last year, Romania and Bulgaria received a negative vote from the Netherlands and Austria for the accession to the Schengen area. However, the Romanian authorities have declared that all efforts would be continued to reach the "goal".
