Expert: Remittances in 2022, compared to salary, are 2.3 times lower than in 2007

Transfers from abroad in 2022 reached the historical maximum of $1.75 billion, but compared to the salary, they were 2.3 times lower than in 2007. The clarification was made by economic policy expert Veaceslav Ioniță, who reported the transfers from abroad to the salary obtained by Moldovans in the country.

Last year, Moldovans working abroad transferred home over $1.75 billion. Net foreign exchange transfers were $126 million higher than in 2021.

According to Veaceslav Ioniță, transfers from abroad continue to play a high role in the Moldovan economy, but much weaker than 15 years ago. In contrast to the salary, they are currently 2.3 times lower than in the period 2005-2008.

Compared to the previous record from 2008, transfers in 2022 were $89 million higher, points out Veaceslav Ioniță, but they could be even higher, if we did not witness a strong depreciation of the euro against the US dollar in 2022.

The economic expert compared the data and reported the transfers from abroad to the salary earned by Moldovans in the country. Thus, in the period 2005-2008, official transfers from abroad were higher than the salaries received in the Republic of Moldova. Currently, even if the transfers have reached the maximum quota of $1.75 billion, they are still two times lower than the salaries obtained by Moldovans in the country, which are estimated for 2022 at $3.22 billion.
