CNA probes embezzlement of EU funds for Moldova renovation projects
The National Anticorruption Center (CNA) and prosecutors conducted several searches as part of an investigation into the embezzlement of European funds earmarked for the renovation of properties in the "Lower Prut" Biosphere Reserve in Cahul.
According to ongoing investigations, former officials from the Project Implementation Unit associated with the “Moldsilva” Agency are suspected of fraudulently managing more than 10 million lei.
Investigators suspect that only half of the funds allocated to these construction projects were used for their intended purposes.
Preliminary findings suggest that, for the renovation of an existing building and the design of a garage with a combined budget of 7.4 million lei, the contracted economic agent utilised only 3.7 million lei, with the remaining approximately 4 million lei allegedly embezzled.
The investigation targets include the former head of the Project Implementation Unit, a representative of the contracted economic agent, and an individual from the design company. Three individuals are expected to be formally identified as suspects and will be investigated without being held in detention.
