EU seeks more U.S. LNG to cut dependence on Russian gas
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced that she has proposed to the newly elected U.S. President, Donald Trump, an increase in liquefied natural gas (LNG) deliveries from the United States to the European Union.
This proposal aims to replace LNG imports from Russia, which EU member states continue to rely on, AFP reports.
Following Russia's invasion of Ukraine and the sabotage of the Nord Stream pipelines, the EU adopted a policy to reduce its imports of Russian natural gas. These imports have been partially replaced by LNG, primarily sourced from the United States.
According to European Energy Commissioner Kadri Simson, Russian gas now represents 18% of the EU’s total gas imports, a significant decrease from 45% in 2021. The source also highlights that other major suppliers of natural gas to the EU include Norway, North African countries, the United Kingdom, and Qatar.
