First conviction for illegal financing of a political party in the Republic of Moldova

The Anticorruption Prosecutor's Office announced the first conviction for the illegal financing of a political party in the Republic of Moldova. The Chisinau Court based in Buiucani accepted a plea agreement signed by a defendant on October 4.

According to a press release from the institution, the defendant confessed to facilitating the transport and distribution of unaccounted sums of money and gifts, through intermediaries, to individuals providing services for the "Sansa" Political Party. These services included promoting the party's image and candidates, as well as participating in meetings and demonstrations. The defendant was arrested in March after he delivered a package containing 613,500 lei, which was intended for distribution to individuals involved in the "Sansa" party's activities.

The Anticorruption Prosecutor's Office reports that the court found the defendant guilty of illegal financing of a political party, accepted the plea agreement, and imposed a fine of 45,000 lei. Additionally, the 613,500 lei in funds were confiscated and transferred to the state.

This sentence can be challenged to the Chisinau Court of Appeal within 15 days.
