International children's book fair: A celebration of reading in Chisinau
The International Children's Book Fair has opened its doors at the capital's exhibition centre.
Visitors can explore a diverse selection of books from over 50 publishing houses in Moldova and abroad, meet renowned authors, and participate in discussions and creative workshops.
This year, 15,000 children will receive a free copy of Maria Pilchin's "The Boy in the Theater," courtesy of the Ministry of Culture. Admission to the fair is free, and publishing houses and distributors are offering discounts of up to 40%.
Book fair attendees can discover fiction and non-fiction books in Romanian and other languages. Approximately 50 books will be launched, and there will be author meet-and-greets, autograph sessions, reading workshops, poetry recitals, and an exhibition of book illustrations.
Young visitors shared their enthusiasm for reading:
- "I prefer books to listening. They help me grow."
- "This fair is a joy for children. Reading develops our minds and language."
- "Books are interesting and great for learning."
- "Reading is exciting. You always discover something new."
Adults also attended the event, eager to stock up on books for their children, especially with the discounts offered by publishers. One visitor said, "A book fair is an extraordinary opportunity to collect more books, perfect for the upcoming holidays."
The fair will also host events commemorating the writer Spiridon Vangheli. Eugenia Bejan, director of the "Ion Creangă" Library, announced the launch of "How I Met Spiridon Vangheli," edited by Petre Crăciun.
Renowned writer Ana Blandiana will launch a new edition of her book "Adventures with Garlic" on Saturday. Ion Muscalu from Iași, a 30-year participant, will also launch his books. He believes that "language, history, faith, and culture define a nation."
A highlight of the fair is the free surprise book "The Boy in the Theater." Maria Pilchin described it as a book that "tells us what theatre means, the beauty of theatre."
The event aims to foster a love of reading among young people, support literary creativity, and promote writers, illustrators, and children's book publishers. Viorica Negrei, head of department at the Ministry of Culture, encouraged parents to visit the fair with their children and experience the joy of reading together.
The International Children's Book Fair will conclude on Sunday, November 17, with an awards ceremony.
