Russia stopped natural gas supplies to Austria this morning. Gazprom, the energy giant in Russia, is unhappy that it was forced to pay fines of 230 million euros for non-compliance with contractual provisions, writes Euronews. The announcement was made by the Austrian company, which manages the gas transportation network.
Even if it runs out of gas from Russia, the Austrian company assures that it has alternative sources of import. Austria, along with Slovakia, are among the few states in the European Union dependent on Russian gas.
Most European countries currently rely on imports from Norway, North Africa and Azerbaijan.
Before Russia's war in Ukraine, Kiev and Moscow struck a five-year deal in which Russia agreed to send fixed amounts of gas to Europe through Ukraine's pipeline system - built when both countries were part of Soviet Union. Even if it runs out of gas from Russia, the Austrian company assures that it has alternative sources for imports. Austria, along with Slovakia, is one of the few states in the European Union that rely on Russian gas.
