UN climate chief urges G20 for climate finance

The UN climate chief, Simon Stiell, has urged G20 leaders to signal their support for increased global climate finance at their upcoming meeting in Rio de Janeiro next week, according to Reuters.

The appeal, made in a letter to G20 leaders by the UN climate chief, comes as negotiators at the COP29 conference in Baku struggle to secure a deal to address the worsening impacts of climate change.

He emphasised that the signal should support increased grants and loans, as well as debt relief, to enable vulnerable countries to take bolder climate action without being burdened by debt service costs.

Business leaders have also expressed concern over the lack of progress and focus on climate finance at the COP29 conference in Baku.
