Chișinău's new traffic centre: Smarter city, safer roads
Chișinău has recently launched a new Traffic Monitoring Center that will provide real-time data and information, including on public transportation.
This system aims to improve road safety and find solutions to optimise the city’s transportation network.
According to project developers, the new centre will provide a comprehensive view of the city’s transportation situation. By prioritising traffic lights and reducing delays, it will improve the efficiency and reliability of public transport. Additionally, drivers will receive real-time information about traffic conditions and other factors that may affect their journey.
“Certainly, within the project, we have other activities that have already been completed and some that we will implement. We have developed an urban mobility plan for Chișinău, which would cover all these issues described by my colleagues. We will present a study on the electronic ticket. All these activities will contribute to ensuring efficient and well-organised transport in Chișinău,” said Olga Lozan, the project manager.
Jānis Mažeiks, the European Union Ambassador to Chișinău, believes this traffic monitoring centre will revolutionise how traffic flow is managed and regulated in the Moldovan capital.
“Chișinău certainly needs significant improvements to its mobility and transport system. This centre will contribute to reducing traffic, improving road safety, and facilitating better decision-making,” said Mažeiks.
Some bus stops are equipped with monitoring systems that provide real-time information about public transport. However, several passengers interviewed believe that the system still needs improvement.
“I think the fact that we can see how soon the trolleybus arrives is a benefit because it helps us not to rush, not to stress about how long it will take to get to our destination,” said one passenger.
Another passenger commented, “It’s good. It helps me know how long I have to wait for transportation.”
“Yes, it helps,” said a third passenger. “The number 30 shows in a minute, let’s see if it comes in a minute. It’s necessary at all stops, right away.”
The "MOVE IT like Lublin" project - the initiative for the sustainable development of public transport in the municipality of Chisinau, financed by the European Union, is implemented on the basis of a partnership between the City Hall of Chisinau and the City Hall of Lublin in Poland. The total project budget is 3.5 million euros, with 3.325 million euros coming from a European Union grant and 175,000 euros from the Chisinau City Hall.
