How Moldova supports Ukrainian refugees with child allowances
Refugee mothers from Ukraine who have arrived in our country receive the same child-rearing allowances as Moldovan citizens.
Therefore, when a child is born in the Republic of Moldova, the family is entitled to a one-time allowance. Likewise, a monthly allowance is provided for child-rearing until the child turns two. According to the National Social Insurance House, approximately 2,300 Ukrainian refugees have received social allowances since the start of the war.
A total of 423 Ukrainian refugee women have received the one-time childbirth allowance. Among them is Natalia Zahorniak, a 26-year-old from Odessa, who fled the war in March 2023. When she arrived in the Republic of Moldova, Natalia had a young son, and in August, she gave birth to a daughter.
"With this money, I bought my daughter a stroller, clothes, and diapers. I have two children, and this support is much appreciated by our family," said Natalia Zahorniak.
Since the start of the war, over 1,700 refugee families in our country have received the monthly child-rearing allowance for children up to the age of two, Maria Varzari, a representative of the National Social Insurance House, told Radio Moldova.
"According to the data we hold, the National Social Insurance House, in line with the Government's decision from February 2024, has established the one-time childbirth allowance for 423 beneficiaries, totaling 6,306,000 lei; the monthly child-rearing allowance for 1,710 beneficiaries, totaling 32 million lei; and the monthly allowance for the care of twins or other multiple children born from a single pregnancy until the age of 3, for 15 beneficiaries," said Maria Varzari.
According to the Ministry of Labor and Social Protection, since the outbreak of the armed conflict in Ukraine, over one million refugees have passed through the Republic of Moldova, and currently, around 120,000 Ukrainians remain in our country, including 52,000 children.
