Călin Georgescu’s rise: What it means for Romanian democracy

If the independent candidate Călin Georgescu wins the second round of Romania’s presidential elections, the country could face a situation akin to Bulgaria, which is led by a pro-Russia president, said Romanian political analyst Radu Magdin on the program Morning with Radio Moldova.

"One could argue that within Romanian democracy, which is closely aligned with Brussels and Washington, a strong source of pressure has emerged: Mr. Georgescu. I believe substantial work is needed on the leadership system—it calls for willpower, values, and vision. All these aspects require improvement, both fundamentally and in terms of presentation.

Matters will become clearer over the next two to three days. Undoubtedly, proactive attacks against Călin Georgescu will emerge, intended to diminish his potential influence on vote transfers to Parliament," Magdin added.

Based on preliminary results from Romania’s presidential elections, Călin Georgescu secured 22.94% of the votes, trailing Elena Lasconi with 19.17%.
