Protests continue in Romania as thousands of young people oppose the candidacy of Călin Georgescu, who is advancing to the second round of the presidential elections
On Tuesday evening, hundreds of demonstrators chanted, "Young people, do not vote for a dictator," during protests held in Bucharest and other major cities across Romania. They are reacting to Georgescu’s success in the first round of the elections. Georgescu, an independent candidate, is known for his anti-Western views and pro-Putin sympathies, drawing concerns about his "legionary" connections.
Last night, over 1,000 young people protested in the center of Bucharest, while smaller demonstrations also occurred in Timișoara, Sibiu, Brașov, Iași, and Constanța. In University Square, the protesters chanted, "Here, night after night, let’s not go outside," expressing their opposition and highlighting a perceived "legionary danger." They raised questions about the sources of Georgescu’s funding, shouting, "Where does the legionary get his money from?" The young protesters announced they would continue their demonstrations this evening, reads Hotnews.
In the upcoming second round of the presidential elections, Călin Georgescu will face off against Elena Lasconi, the liberal leader of the Save Romania Union, who came in second. Lasconi won a significant portion of the vote from Moldovans with Romanian citizenship, but Georgescu secured the majority of votes from the Romanian diaspora.
Additionally, parliamentary elections are set to take place in Romania on Sunday, December 1, coinciding with the second round of the presidential elections. For the diaspora, voting in the parliamentary elections begins on Saturday, November 30.
