Maia Sandu, at the Media Forum: Disinformation and electoral bribery – dangerous tools against our democracy
Disinformation is one of the greatest challenges to democracy in the Republic of Moldova, emphasized President Maia Sandu and the ambassadors of the European Union and the United Kingdom at a recent forum. The President of the country, Maia Sandu, alongside the ambassadors of the EU and the United Kingdom, emphasized during the Media Forum that waves of information manipulation not only distort reality but also affect social stability and citizens' trust.
"The elections in Moldova were marked by an unprecedented wave of disinformation, aimed at weakening social unity, sowing distrust, dividing, and influencing people's choices. Disinformation and electoral corruption are two of the most dangerous weapons in the hybrid war waged against our democracy," said Maia Sandu.
The Ambassador of the European Union to Chișinău, Janis Majeiks, highlighted that information manipulation endangers the democratic future of the country.
"Disinformation does not only affect politicians, but the very future of Moldova. It is a crime against democracy and must be treated as such. It is a fight for democracy, stability, and the future of the country.
In turn, the British Ambassador, Fern Horine, drew attention to the risks associated with the use of social media.
"Social media dominates the way people get informed, but it amplifies the risk of misinformation. It is crucial to find solutions to combat false information without compromising freedom of expression. Quality journalism and transparency are essential in this process"
We mention that the recent elections this fall have highlighted the country's vulnerability to disinformation. According to experts, the manipulation campaigns were allegedly supported by external sources, especially entities associated with the Kremlin. They spread false messages on sensitive topics such as energy security, European integration, and national identity. Social media, especially Facebook and TikTok, were the main channels through which this disinformation spread.
